Hey, Getting Into Space Is Hard!

Antares Is Given The Self Destruct Order

Antares Launch Failure

Like  a lot of people on the east coast we were outside in the backyard waiting to see Antares launch from nearby Wallops Island!

And like many we were shocked when there was a launch failure. We’ve become so used to NASA and their partners having success and making it look easy. So much so that when it was announced that the Control Center self destructed the rocket, people immediately began their criticism without even knowing what really happened.

The space shuttle failed catastrophically one out of every 50 launches (a statistical fact that held true for 25 years before the design was retired), but what really gets everyone’s blood boiling with this launch seems to be that this was a private sector launch? I don’t get that.

Antares Launch for Monday 27th – Scrubbed

20141027-AntaresAntares Launches From Wallops Island

October 27st 6:45 pm eastern!
Launch Cancelled.

Wallops Island Launch facility uses part of the Atlantic Ocean as it’s launch area. Rockets generally launch from the pad begin an arch flight pattern over the water for maximum safety.

This launch area is called The Box.Technically it’s called The Army Corp of Engineers Danger Zone. But there actually two Boxes. The first box begins at the shore line. The second Danger Zone is much larger and further off shore. Check the NASA Mariner Notices “Flight Safety Plan” issued by NASA for this Antares launch for more information.

If an unknown boat of any kind finds itself in The Box, countdown is stopped. NASA has a procedure to clear area with their own Mariner support. Every attempt is made to clear The Box, but there is a time limit for doing that. Tonight the window was 10 minutes. The Box continued to be Red and Launch staff called the Scrub for tonight launch. The next window for launch will be tomorrow Tuesday October 28th at 18:15 to 19:45

Orbital Sciences’ launch of the Antares two-stage launch vehicle is set for launch Monday evening, if the weather and mechanical issues will cooperate. It’s a beautiful early night here in Virginia and we’ll be heading outside in about 10 minutes to watch the lift-off from Wallops Island!

The Antares rocket will carry Orbital’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft, loaded with some 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments, to the International Space Station.

The launch may be visible, weather permitting, to residents throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States. For a visibility map of launch, see Viewing Area map.

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va.—NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility and Virginia’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport are set to support the launch of Orbital Sciences’ Antares rocket at 6:45 p.m. EDT, October 27.

Public viewing of the launch will be available at the NASA Visitor Center at Wallops and at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge/Assateague Island National Seashore. Visitors are reminded that alcohol and pets are not allowed on the Visitor Center grounds.

For more information about the Visitors Center, including directions, see: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/wallops/visitorcenter

For more information on viewing sites recommended by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission, see: http://www.esvatourism.org/space/landing_page_space.asp.

Live coverage of the mission is scheduled to begin at noon on the Wallops Ustream site at:

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Thank You For Your Service!

A deep and heart-felt Thank You to all the Men and Women of our Armed Services, living and in spirit! Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Memorial Day

Produced by The U.S. Air Force News Agency

Thank you to ALL our Animal Veterans

Thank you to ALL our Animal Veterans

This weekend is a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for freedom. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union Soldiers. The south too had its day of Decoration, but the date of celebration varied through out each region of the nation.

On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30th date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971.

From The Beginning
From its origins, Decoration Day expanded with each passing year becoming more nationally recognized for all Veterans of the Armed Forces and from every war the United States has participated in. The practice grew again after World War II when Decoration Day slowly transitioned to Memorial Day and included any family member that had passed. It became a day of remembering relatives and decorating cemeteries, whither or not they were service men and women. Many suggest the sacrifices that all Americans made during WWI and WWII to support our troops deserved recognition as well. Thus the day of honoring those who made sacrifices and lived through the hardships of war were included in Memorial Events.

Today Memorial Day is seen as one of the two biggest Patriotic Days of the year in the United States. Coming second only to the 4th of July. Flags are placed on grave sites for those who paid the greatest price for our freedom and flowers are laid by those we have lost and remember with memories and love.

What ever your method of celebration and honor this weekend, when you see a soldier thank them for their service. Let them know you appreciate their sacrifice and support them here and over there and every where.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone. Please have a safe and relaxing extended weekend! And spend a few moments remembering what this weekend is really all about.

Thank you to the vets and their families for your service and your sacrifices. To those serving today, yesterday and tomorrow; you’re always in our thoughts and prayers!

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day

May you all have a great day, honoring the Mother that has supported you. Including Mother Earth.

~ My Heart And Soul ~

Thank you, Mom
For standing by me through thick and thin,
For not giving up on me when I didn’t win.
For your patience and never-ending support,
For caring when I would sell myself short.

I am grateful knowing…
You’re always there building up my courage,
sharing your wisdom that always encourage.
If I lose my way you help me get back on track,
If my heart breaks, you bring the laughter back.

Mom, Thank you
For your guidance and the love you’ve shown,
For giving me the confidence to stand on my own.
For bailing me out when I needed it the most,
For being there to celebrate and toast!

For all the sacrifices to back my dreams,
For all the help with my crazy schemes.
For the days and nights you held my hand,
There’s no better Mom than you, in any land.
